It's a fruit fly horror story.
It's a fruit fly horror story. I got home from work today to discover my kitchen was overrun by fruit flies. "What the hell is happening here?" I set my purse down on the counter and the kitchen disappeared in a cloud of black. Well.... Maybe not quite that bad.... But, it was bad enough that I was looking around to see where the source of my infestation was coming from. Any fruit sitting anywhere?? Nope.... Check! Anything in the garbage that would draw a fruit fly?? Nope.... In fact, the flies weren't even in the garbage. Check! Unwashed dishes creating a breeding ground?? One dried up plate, one dried up fork, a coffee cup with a swallow of coffee and 15 dead fruit flies floating in it, but no breeding ground. Check! It was during my inspection of the sink that I did discover, though, the fruit fly infestation is likely originating from my sink drain! Uh... Yah.... totally disgusting. I know what that means when you have a septic tank and well water. That means you have to get your septic pumped. But, what does that mean when you have city water and septic??? I ran a ton of water down the drain then put the stopper in the sink but I'm not sure what to do about my swarm. What do you do with a swarm?? Name it and start charging rent? Wait until their dead carcasses fall from the air and sweep them into the trash? Do they crawl into cracks and crevices and disappear from sight?? These are questions that are haunting me right now. For the moment, I'm avoiding my kitchen, naming my new room mate Brock, and trying to decide how much rent to charge before their lifeless bodies start littering my counter. Happy Wednesday! |

We have them on the West Coast. They are sewer flies. They will also lay their eggs in your toilet or sink. When they infest the best thing to do is clean the sink & drain stopper with comet type cleaner & bleach down the drain. A bleach type cleaner for all counter top surfaces & scrub your toilet to remove the eggs. They infect on the West Coast during the hot months ...

Make it apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish wash soap in an open bowl it worked for us. I read also if they come from the drain to use gel type drain o to clean out your pipes ..also pours the apple cider vinegar down your trailer stand over night.. you can use old wine or old beer that has turned sour. It a pool party then. Good luck try on the spawn see if she changes lolollloll

I already tried the bleach thing..... If that doesn't work I'll try this next. Won't the mixture get foamy, though?

Damn, woman! You seem to have all the fun! I have a bunch of baby spiders that would help with the problem. Should I ship them to you?

If they were coming up from the drain then they are what is called sewage flies. They are similar to help put bleach down drain And let sit for a little while then run water.

All they want is a swimming pool of water and vinegar when the pool is filled bend them back where they come from clean the pool add more water and vinegar leave a light on . I'll Goggle it and get back to you. I'm pretty sure that's all they want no life guard needed. I'll hate them myself add some ginger to your sink trap all so ... I've not experienced a swarm of fruit flies but charging them rent sounds like the best solution! Seriously I hope you get the problem sorted soon.

An annoying dilemma, for which I have no suggestion. I didn't know drains attracted fruit flies. If you'd asked me about Canada Geese — who block the road — I'd offer a tip. Honk your horn and just plow through that fricken, frock of feathers; they WILL disperse in a hurry. The other drivers glared at me and waited, patiently. But I'm ALWAYS on that street, I've lost patience with those buggers, and I don't know any of them personally. F 'em! Now, about your flies. Dja have an air horn? 🤔
