Do you buy a lot of expensive clothes?
Do you buy a lot of expensive clothes? Do you buy a lot of expensive clothes? Are you what we used to call a clothes ? When I worked at a title insurance company in downtown Los Angeles circa 1963, I was required to wear a suit and tie. I worked there as a title-escrow officer for about 3 years and then resigned. It was a good job, with steady raises and a good deal of big-shot prestige...I had my own office, and my own private secretary, but the job was inside, and I hated wearing the suit and tie. This was about the only time in my life when I actually spent a little money on clothes. Keeping suits and mostly white shirts professionally cleaned was a real pain in the ass that I still remember. Taking the clothes to the cleaners and then picking them up again, and making sure nothing was lost was a chore I really did not like. During this era, jobs in Los Angeles were a dime a dozen. Workers in all areas were in high demand. I've forgotten what job I took when I resigned from that real estate insurance job, but I think it was the interesting job I had working in a roving neighborhood carnival. I was the driver of a big rig that moved the bumper cars from one place to another, and then the rig was built so the sides cranked down and became the platform for the small bumper cars to drive on. The clothes I wore then were just work clothes and heavy gloves to protect my hands. After a few months on that job I was promoted to also running the bumper car amusement when the carnival was opened. The job was a lot of fun because I was working outside, physically, which I've always loved, and I was dealing with a lot of pretty girls when the carnival was up and running... Around that time in my life I decided to go back to school under the G.I. Bill. I needed some courses in order to get into UCLA, and in those days Los Angeles City College on Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles was a very good Junior College where I could make up the few courses I needed for admittance to the University. I already had a pile of credits from The Bridgeport Engineering School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and from the University of Connecticut, and also credits given to the many courses I'd taken while in the Army in Germany, but I didn't have the correct credits for UCLA. When I went to Los Angeles City College, my life turned suddenly in a direction I'd never expected. I met and became friends with four men who had all been in the Army like me, and were also back in school under the old G.I. Bill. The five of us started a small business renting and selling soft porn to bars throughout the L.A. area... Now, jumping up to 1976 when I bought this cabin on the Mojave Desert, I've worn only jeans during the cooler months, and shorts and short-sleeved shirts during the hot weather. The most expensive thing I have in my wardrobe is a heavy leather sheepheader's jacket that set me back a few hundred bucks. So what about you? You're probably still working unless you've lost your job due to our plunging economy. Are you forced to wear clothes that you'd like to shove in a trash can somewhere? What do you wear on your off days? by davidstardust July 20th, 2012 early morning... |

You are such a wonderful character, Emeritebelles! And I mean that in such a nice way! Yes the bumper cars were a lot of fun. Working in that carnival was fun too! There don't seem to be many thrift stores here on the desert. I imagine in Palm Springs there probably are plenty of them. When I go to Walmart in a fairly large city about 30 miles away, I usually buy a dozen white T shirts some extra large white cotton socks, and shoes if they have any 15 wides. Living out here doesn't require much in the way of clothes... I would have loved to have punched your ticket when I was running those bumper cars! lol xxxxdavid

I'm glad you can find the things you like to wear in those stores. I too just wear shorts most of the time out here--or nothing at all. I have a little trouble buying shoes, and I go through them pretty fast because M. and I do a lot of walking and I've found the sand gets in the seams of the shoes and wears them out pretty quickly. Thankfully, Walmart, my favorite store, has been stocking a few shoes that fit me. 15 wide, at reasonable prices. xxxxdavid

Why thank you Smrtgirl... The first forty years of my life went fast and furious, crammed with so many things I have to think carefully about the order of what happened first.. If I'd been able to arrange my life, I'd have done it in just this way. I loved all the excitement when I was young, and now I love the peace and quiet and long summer days to be working on some menial chore while my mind is free to wander back.xxxxdavid
